6 November 2014, 9:00 – 11:45. Location: Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, Pontins väg 6, Stockholm
APECS Sweden together with the Stockholm Association of International Affairs presents a seminar that explores historical precedents and contemporary expressions of the interface of science and politics in the Arctic. Conducting scientific research in the High North has become a political imperative for an increasingly wide array of states, including many from outside the region, which see the Arctic both as a key node in the changing global environment, and as an area of emerging economic opportunity and enhanced geopolitical importance.
International scientific collaboration has become a key means for generating knowledge on how environmental change in the Arctic affects major Earth systems such as climate, while also providing a basis for political legitimacy for those states active in the region. In this seminar, the ambassadors of France and South Korea together with experts on Arctic science, history and politics provide insights and perspectives on this mutually reinforcing process of building scientific knowledge and political legitimacy in the Arctic.
A final program will be posted soon. Seating is very limited. Please RSVP by 31 Oct. to paglia@kth.se
